Reading Horizons At-Home

Orton-Gillingham-based reading software for home, in a version for ages 4–9 and one for 10 to adult.

AppAges 4–9 (Discovery) and 10 to adult (Elevate)

Our take

Home versions of the software Reading Horizons sells to schools. Children learn the 42 sounds, then blends and digraphs, long, short and r-controlled vowels and diphthongs, then two rules for dividing longer words. Lessons include dictation, and short checks confirm a skill before moving on. Discovery is for ages 4–9 and Elevate for 10 to adult. The software does not listen to your child read.

A good fit for

  • Older children, teens and adults who need to start from the sounds
  • Families who want self-running software with a clear sequence

Look elsewhere if

  • Children who need someone to hear them read
